Fayetteville, NC, DWLR (Driving While License Revoked) Attorney

Defense In North Carolina For DWLR Charges

A driving while license revoked (DWLR) charge causes problems in both criminal and civil court and can also affect your auto insurance points. Perhaps you are the driver who did not know that your license was suspended until a police officer pulled you over in a routine traffic stop. Or perhaps you are the driver who discovers your license was suspended when your auto insurance carrier drops your coverage.

I am Gregory M. Byrd, Attorney at Law, and I am a criminal defense lawyer. A common issue I handle is helping reinstate driver’s licenses for those charged with a DWLR. I represent clients in both civil court and criminal court proceedings in North Carolina.

Driving While Licensed Revoked

The DMV is granted the final decision to suspend your license. They can decide to take it for a DWI conviction, excess points on your driving record or for a variety of traffic violations. On occasion your license can be suspended and you are not aware of it — especially if you live out of state. Typical reasons for a license suspension include:

  • Failure to appear in court for a traffic violation
  • Suspension for excessive speeding
  • Suspension for driving while impaired

As a criminal defense attorney, I have had success in getting the license suspension time period reduced or suspended so my clients don’t have to cope with any additional license revocation time. The results I am able to achieve for you will depend on the facts of your case.

Contact my law firm to schedule an initial meeting and we can get the process started.

Stiff Penalties For Traffic Violation And DWLR Convictions

If you are convicted of a DWLR, in conjunction with a traffic violation, the penalties can be quite stiff. The DMV adds additional time to your driver’s license suspension:

  • A first additional revocation is for one year
  • A second revocation is for two years
  • A third or subsequent revocation is permanent
